What It's Like to Visit the Beach in the Fall
Okaloosa Island, also known as the Emerald Coast, has beautiful beaches year-round, so it's always an exciting place to visit. But one of the best times to go to the beach in Okaloosa Island is during the fall and winter months when there are fewer crowds and you can enjoy activities like surfing, swimming, fishing and kayaking without worrying about getting burned by the sun. The weather will still be warm enough to allow plenty of beach fun but not so hot that you feel uncomfortable in your swimsuit.
1) Things To Do
Make Okaloosa Island Your Destination When You’re Looking For Winter Getaways Many people think that Okaloosa Island is one of those beaches that are simply too hot for beach vacations come fall. That’s not true at all. In fact, Okaloosa is a perfect destination for anyone looking for a cool retreat from summertime heat and humidity. The temperature on Okaloosa is 20 degrees cooler than it would be on a beach located just 50 miles up Florida’s coast.
2) Destin Fishing Rodeo
Okaloosa Island is full of magnificent locations for fishing throughout all four seasons. From late October to early January, many locations host the Destin Fishing Rodeo, which draws fishermen from all over. Tournaments are held at local Destin area hotspots like Okaloosa Island Pier, East Pass and more. The Rodeo usually has hundreds of participants who compete for cash prizes that range from $5,000-$7,500. There are also separate contests for kids under 16 years old where they can win trophies and prizes worth up to $2,000. All contests are individually judged by experts within their respective field based on categories such as biggest fish caught or most fish caught during a period of time.
3) Staying at Destin West
There are only a few hotels on Okaloosa Island, but they tend to fill up fast during prime fishing season. If you’re planning a trip, book as far ahead as possible and look into renting a condo through Destin West. Why bother renting a place instead of just staying at one of those famed hotels? For one thing, condos and houses have kitchens so you can save money by cooking your own meals instead of eating out every night. In addition, many condos have gorgeous views from private balconies or porches—there’s something special about waking up each morning and watching boats come and go from Destin Harbor.
4) Where To Eat on Okaloosa Island
Hungry after a day on Okaloosa Island? You’re in luck. Whether you’re looking for a quick bite, an upscale experience or even something authentic, you won’t have trouble finding food at restaurants scattered around Destin and Okaloosa Island. Just remember: While plenty of places stay open year-round, they aren’t always busy during off-season months. To avoid disappointment, call ahead and make sure your chosen establishment is planning on serving dinner before you arrive. Happy eating!
